6 servings; 175°C, 45 minutes
4 green apples (you can use any apples but the green ones are best because of their sour flavor), peeled, cut into wedges, thinly sliced, laid on a baking tray
A twist: add some chunks of canned pineapples in the apple layer.

Mixture A:
- 1/3 cup sugar (preferably brown)
- ½ Tbsp all-purpose flour
- ½ tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 ½ Tbsp water or lemon juice or apple sauce
Mix the dry ingredients of mixture A. Then add the liquid.
Sprinkle this slurry mixture on the apple layer.
Mixture A’, the pineapple version:
- ½ Tbsp all-purpose flour
- ½ tsp ground cinnamon
- 4-5 Tbsp sugary water from a can of pineapple Sprinkle this on the apple layer.
Crumble Mixture:
- ½ cup quick oats
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- a pinch of salt
- 1/3 cup sugar (preferably brown)
- 1/3 tsp baking powder (optional)
- 1/3 tsp baking soda (optional)
- ¼ cup oil (or melted butter), you can also use olive oil
Combine all dry ingredients from “Crumble Mixture” well.
Then add oil. Use a fork or your hand to combine the dry and wet ingredients until you barely see white dry flour.
Add this “Crumble Mixture” onto the apple layer (that was sprinkled with “Mixture A”).
Bake in a preheated oven at 175°C for 45-50 minutes, with top and bottom fire.
This apple crumble should taste sweet and slightly sour, with moist and soft apple slices at the bottom, and a crunchy crumble on top. This recipe can be best enjoyed a day later, after the flavors develop further. You can eat it as is or with some vanilla ice-cream. This apple crumble can be stored outside within 2 days when the weather is cool, or in the fridge up to 5 days.
A fond memory with this recipe
I have been remaking this recipe many times over the last autumn for different friend groups and it has been a hit. Last January, there was a cooking competition on campus, we did not know beforehand which ingredients there would be. This cooking competition gave extra points if we used the secret ingredients: the canned food for combat IDF soldiers.
I was looking at a can of pineapple, voila, came the twist!
